Forget the Program: Let the Joneses Keep up with You

You’re supposed to follow the “get a good job and work for someone else for 40 years so you can retire and start living the good life” model while you try to keep up with the Joneses.

Wait, what?

Forty years, and if you don’t get hit by a meteor, a runaway milk truck, or get eaten by the Joneses in a zombie apocalypse, then you get to finally enjoy life?!?

You can be happy and make plenty of money doing it that way. But if you’re here, it’s because you want something a little different. You are looking to change something.

You want to:

  • Do the things you want to “live the good life” now, not at some deferred date in your uncertain future.
  • Start a business doing that thing you really love.
  • Travel and live anywhere in the world whenever you feel like it.
  • Set your own hours and make your own rules.
  • Pursue that art you’re dying to create, or that hobby you never have time for now.
  • Whatever your reasons, whatever your circumstances: you can design your life however you like.

If that traditional model isn’t working for you and you want to change something, then you’ve come to the right place. People of all ages and circumstances have done it and are doing it every day.

I’ve discarded that old model. Now I focus on experiences rather than “things” while running my Copywriting Business fixing crummy websites with no personality or creating new ones to get traffic to their sites (more sales!). Right now I’m traveling pretty light and seeing as much of the world as I can.

Because I can.

How I Got Here

My reasons for really making a change got a kick in the ass in 2007 and involved a micromanaging boss and a girl (doesn’t it always). I knew I had to figure out how to get out of that place and make a life for myself before I ended up in trouble when my last nerve got jumped on one too many times.

There had to be a better way.

I’d heard of people living outside the “norm” of life: cruising around the country in RVs, living on sailboats, or backpacking around the world. I wanted to do all of it!

Stumbling around for years, I had no idea what that better way was so I started making it up as I went. The road was riddled with wreckage along the way as I ham-fisted my way to designing my own life.

Looking around the internet a bit, I realized there were other people doing these things I wanted to do. Most of them were all too happy to tell me how they did it (whatever their own “it” happens to be).

Things picked up quite a bit after that, and the mistakes dropped significantly with all this new information and help from people who actually knew what they were doing. This site is here to save you some of that stumbling so you don’t have to make my same mistakes.

Today I can work wherever I have electricity and internet access (which almost covers the planet now), and experience a rich life that allows me the freedom to see things daily that can’t be found in a cubicle (especially if your micromanaging boss blocked all the good websites).

As an example: As I’m re-writing this page tonight, I happen to be savoring the smell of street food blowing in on the tropical breeze through my open balcony window in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I’m simply exploring the Southeast Asia region until I get tired of it, or they get tired of me.
